Project Description:
Lebanon’s electricity sector is currently suffering from a profound crisis. Electricité du Liban (EDL), the country’s main electricity provider, is no longer able to provide the electricity needed for homes, offices, and industries. It has accumulated massive debts and is costing the government significant amounts of subsidies. Additionally, approximately 87% of Lebanon’s electricity comes from polluting thermal energy. The Baadran plant is not connected to the EDL grid due to its remote location, so it must rely on a diesel generator to power the plant. The primary objective of this study is to promote a decentralized production initiative focused specifically on the exploitation of renewable energy. Renewable energy, including solar photovoltaic (PV), comes from sources that are constantly replenished by nature, unlike non-renewable energy, whose reserves are running out. Utilizing renewable energy generates very few polluting emissions, ensures operational sustainability, and reduces treatment and sorting costs, as part of an integrated plan submitted by the Union since 2015.
Within the framework of this document, a feasibility study was initiated to install solar photovoltaic energy on the roof of the solid waste treatment center in the town of Baadran, affiliated with the Union of Municipalities of the Upper Chouf. The objectives of this study are multiple:
- Verify the feasibility and importance of the solar photovoltaic project
- Aim to achieve energy self-sufficiency at the treatment center
- Conduct a preliminary assessment of the potential energy sources for the building in question
- Calculate the costs and profitability of installation
