What Should Be the Role of Agricultural Extension in Lebanon Over the Next 10 Years?
Lebanese agriculture is facing multiple challenges: climate change, water scarcity, rising production costs, market instability, labor shortages, migration from rural areas, and limited public resources.
At the same time, new opportunities are emerging through digital technologies, farmer organizations, value chain development, and stronger collaboration among universities, research institutions, NGOs, the private sector, and government agencies.

Traditionally, agricultural extension focused on transferring technical information to farmers. Today, many experts argue that extension should play a broader role as a facilitator of innovation, problem-solving, networking, and rural development.

    Questions for discussion:
    1. What do you think should be the most important role of agricultural extension in Lebanon over the next 10 years?
    2. What are the main challenges that extension services will need to address?
    3. Which actors should be involved in delivering extension services (Ministry of Agriculture, universities, cooperatives, NGOs, private sector, digital platforms, farmers themselves)?
    4. How can extension better support young farmers and women in rural areas?
    5. What role should digital tools and artificial intelligence play in future extension services?
Please support your opinions with examples from Lebanon or other countries whenever possible.
